This class is offered as a weekend program, as an evening program, as a 12-day intensive and as a morning class. In this class, you will learn the basic foundation work as needed for a professional massage practice. You will learn to give a flowing, thorough, and effective Swedish-style relaxation massage in 1 ½ hour and 1-hour formats. An introduction to musculoskeletal anatomy will be taught. Emphasis is placed on developing confidence, presence, and the quality of touch needed for effective work. Ethics, side-lying massage, benefits, contraindications, establishing a massage practice, and proper draping technique will be taught. You will receive individual coaching in correct and efficient body mechanics from the beginning of the class, so that you will develop good postural habits immediately, enabling you to have a long, injury free career, where your work can be effortless, relaxed and energizing for you. You will give and receive massage to fellow students. Chair (on-site) massage technique, hydrotherapy applications, and other specialty work may also be taught. You will be exceptionally well prepared to begin working as a Massage Therapist. Completion time, 2 weeks to 1 year. This class is also part of our 250-, 500- & 720-Hour programs.
120 – 130 – 150 Hour Requirement 100 hours of training is the requirement in California to become a Certified Massage Therapist. However, some cities or counties may require more hours of training to issue you with a business license. The City of Woodland requires 130 hours, and some jurisdictions require up to 150 hours. You can easily accomplish this at the Massage Therapy Institute by completing the 100-Hour Certified Massage Therapist program, and 30-50 or more hours of classes of your choice. The city of Sacramento requires 250 hrs. Hours and content of training will be stated on the certificate and in the transcript you receive. This will enable you to obtain a business license in these cities. Please contact your City Hall, the department that issues business licenses, to determine requirements. Vacaville, Dixon, Winters and Davis have no greater requirement than to 100 hr state requirement. Note: All students who graduate from this 100-hour program have the option to register into our 250 or 500 hr programs. To take advantage of the discounted rate you must do so before you take another class at MTI and within two months of completing the 100-Hour Program. You may also complete the 250-, 500-, or 720-Hour Program by paying class by class.

Note: (If you register for slightly more than 250 hours of classes, you may pay for the balance of hours (up to 10) at $10 per hour.) You can choose to start this program with the 100 hr Massage Therapist Program or any Anatomy class, or any elective class that has no prerequisite. This program complies with the City of Sacramento licensing requirements. Completion time for this program is 2 to 12 months, depending upon how often you choose to attend classes. You may extend time taken to complete, with permission from the director.

Note: To graduate from this program, students must show proof of CPR training. Many of the classes in this program are offered on weekends. It is possible to complete this program in 6 months or less, and you may choose to take up to two years to complete all classes. If you wish to take the national Certification Exam, you must include 150 hours of Anatomy classes in your 500-Hour program. You may choose to start this program with the 100 hr Massage Therapist program or any of the Anatomy classes, or the Pathology class, or any elective class that has no prerequisite.

Cost: $1,680 This certification program trains students in several different acupressure styles (some quiet and some active) Students learn how to work with the 5 element theory, the organ meridians, and the acupressure points. Some of the work may be done on traditional floor-mats and some on a massage table. Required classes are: Acupressure - a practice in harmony (30 hrs), Acupressure -Tui Na
(30 hrs), Five Element Assessments (16 hrs),
Meridian Flows of Chinese Medicine (16 hrs). Pulse and Tongue Diagnosis (8hrs), Cupping and Moxibustion (8 hrs), Asian Foot Treatments (6 hrs), Shiatsu for the Massage Table (15hrs), Shiatsu (45hrs), Energies of the Acupressure Points (15hrs), Thai Herbal Compress (4), Acupressure for the Chakras (8). Cost: $1,680 Cranial Sacral Therapy, is a
gentle, hands-on manipulation of the cranial sacral system, (the
soft tissue and bones of the cranium (head), the spine and the
pelvis). It also targets the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that
surround and cushion the brain and spinal cord. This powerfully
effective method of bodywork can be used as an independent modality
or in combination with other techniques. Cost: $2,750 This program prepares students to work with clients who suffer from specific pain and dysfunction resulting from disorders such as chronic low back pain, migraine headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica pain, thoracic outlet and other specific medical conditions. Students will learn to apply various bodywork modalities to specific functional and structural pathologies of the body. This program consists of the following classes: Medical for Massage (80 hrs),
Anatomy and Physiology for Bodyworkers (34 hrs), Prerequisite for this program is 100 hrs of massage training. To graduate from this program students must take or have taken 50 hrs of anatomy classes as well as pathology (50 hrs). Cost: $1,480 Neuromuscular Therapy is a specialized form of soft tissue manual therapy. By assessing the postural dysfunctions that have developed in the body, the neuromuscular therapist can determine how to specifically work with the musculature to bring the body back into alignment. This is a very efficient and effective system of bodywork. It address five of the elements that may cause body pain: Ischemia (lack of blood supply to soft tissues), Trigger Points (irritated points in muscles which refer pain or sensation to other parts of the body), Nerve Compression or Entrapment (pressure on a nerve by soft tissue, cartilage or bone), Postural Distortion (imbalance of the muscular system resulting from the movement of the body off the longitudinal and horizontal planes), Biomechanical Dysfunction (imbalance of the musculoskeletal system resulting in faulty movement patterns, i.e., poor lifting habits, bad mechanics in a golf swing or tennis stroke, computer keyboarding) Prerequisite: 100 hrs of massage training. Cost: $4,360 Massage can be given to any patient at any stage of the cancer experience. Oncology Massage training provides guidelines to massage therapists for safe application of their personal massage style to those with active cancer, those in remission or those in treatment. Isabel Adkins is the primary teacher and her approach integrates both western and eastern modalities to address symptoms and side effects of both treatment and disease. Overview: The Massage Therapy Institute offers a comprehensive 300 hour Oncology Massage Therapist Certification program. Our program is designed to be taken over a period of one year or more in workshop format. Required classes are Oncology Massage 1, 2 & 3, Cancer Basics, Oncology Massage Clinic, Manual Lymphatic Drainage, and Oncology Massage Externship and project. Prerequisite to enter this program - Certified or Licensed Massage Therapist (at least 100 hrs of massage training). 50 hrs of pathology must be taken by the time you complete the program. Massage for People Living with Cancer © is also a prerequisite. This class is always offered at the beginning of our program - twice a year. Other credentials are accepted, with instructor’s permission. All classes are offered in Davis CA. Total cost: for this program is $4,360 if paid in full before your first class. Cost: $1,200 This program is designed for those who would like to work with athletes, both professionals and amateurs. Students will receive training in specific techniques for various sports injuries and injury prevention, and then through the clinical Internship program under close instructor supervision learn by working on clients to specifically address each particular injury/pain management issue. Required classes, for this program are Sports Massage (32 hrs), Sport Massage –Injuries and Prevention (32 hrs), Myofascial Massage (18 hrs), and Trigger Point Therapy (20 hrs), Prerequisite: for this program is 100 hrs of massage training. To graduate, students must take or have taken 100 hrs of Anatomy classes (Maniken Anatomy, OR Anatomy & Kinesiology- upper body, OR Anatomy & Kinesiology- lower body, OR Anatomy and Physiology for Bodyworkers, OR equivalent plus Pathology (50 hrs). This 100 hr Therapist Program is composed of the following classes:
Cost: $1,200 Thai Massage, is an ancient holistic therapy with its roots in Buddhism, yoga, and Chinese Medicine. It is an interactive manipulation of the body using passive stretching and gentle pressure along energy lines (Sen). These movements help adjust the skeletal structure, increase flexibility, relieve muscular and joint tension, stimulate internal organs, and balance the body’s energy system. The effect is extremely relaxing as well as energizing. Traditional Thai Massage is an act of meditation for both giver and receiver. It incorporates the best stretches from traditional Hatha Yoga, the depth of ayurvedic medicine, and Chinese acu-point theory. It is rooted in and practiced with a sense of Buddhist spiritual serenity, and is deeply therapeutic. Sessions are performed on a floor mat with the client dressed in comfortable loose clothing. Note: classes can be credited to one certification program only. This beautiful and ancient bodywork form is becoming internationally popular. Many local spas such as Sonoma Mission Inn, Osmosis Enzyme Bath and Spa, and the Spa Hotel Healdsburg now offer Thai Massage. You will receive a Thai Massage Therapist Certification.
